LONDON (AP) ó Libyan leader Moammar Qaddafi and his cohort of female bodyguards are to take center stage in an opera commissioned by one of Britain's leading companies.
The opera is tentatively scheduled for February 2006, the English National Opera said Thursday [15 July].
The company said it had asked dance-hiphop collective Asian Dub Foundation to create the piece for premiere early in 2006. A rapper, JC001, is tentatively slated to play Qaddafi.
The group's guitarist, Steve Chandra Savale, said the work would trace Qaddafi's journey from pariah to statesman.
Battling a multimillion dollar debt, the ENO is attempting to reach out to new audiences. Last month it performed the third act of Wagner's Die Walk¸re to thousands of rock fans at the Glastonbury music festival.
