Górecki Symphony 4: World Premiere Postponed (17 April 2010)
Friday, January 22, 2010
The London Philharmonic Orchestra and Southbank Centre regret to announce that due to health problems, Henryk Górecki has been unable to complete Symphony 4, commissioned by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Southbank Centre and other partners, which was scheduled to receive its world premiere at the Royal Festival Hall on 17 April. The Orchestra and conductor Marin Alsop will now perform Górecki’s Symphony 3 (Symphony of Sorrowful Songs) with Polish soprano Joanna Woś. The rest of the programme, featuring the European premiere of Philip Glass’s Violin Concerto No. 2 and the UK premiere of Mark-Anthony Turnage’s Texan Tenebrae, remains unchanged. We wish Henryk Górecki a speedy recovery and we hope to premier this major work in the future.
