Sir John Dankworth, jazz musician, composer, clarinettist (initially) and alto-saxophonist, and husband of Dame Cleo Laine, has died at the age of 82. Englishman Dankworth was born on 20 September 1927 in Woodford, Essex. He passed away on Saturday 6 February 2010. He was musical director for Nat 'King' Cole and Ella Fitzgerald, amongst others, and wrote the theme tune for the cult television series The Avengers (in its original guise) and also for the long-running BBC1 factual programme Tomorrow's World, as well as working with many of the leading jazz musicians. The Dankworths' children are also active in the world of jazz; Alec, a bassist, was also a member of his father's band, and Jacqui, a singer.
