The world-renowned Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam continues its first International Associate residency at the Barbican in May. In addition to the remaining 2 concerts, there will be a unique opportunity to gain an insight into the illustrious orchestra’s famous sound when some of the orchestra’s leading musicians give in-depth tuition to musicians from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in a series of nine public masterclasses. The orchestra’s work will also continue beyond the concert platform with a public lecture on conducting with the orchestra’s Chief Conductor Mariss Jansons at LSO St Luke’s.
The orchestra returns to the Barbican on Saturday 12 May with Mariss Jansons, for a programme of Richard Strauss and on the days before and after the concert, musicians from the orchestra hold seven masterclasses in trombone, piccolo, bassoon, harp, oboe, clarinet and cello. These masterclasses are open to the public and take place at the Barbican and at the Guildhall School . Then on Sunday 13 May, Mariss Jansons gives a public lecture on conducting at LSO St Luke’s, in conversation with Viennese dramaturg and cultural critic Peter Blaha. Using audio and video footage of renowned conductors, Jansons explores the art of conducting, communication between conductor and the orchestra, rehearsal techniques and how interpretation is transferred to orchestral musicians.
The residency comes to an end with Honorary Conductor Bernard Haitink conducting Bruckner’s Symphony No 5 on Sunday 20 May, followed by French horn and flute masterclasses the next day.
