Last Thursday, whilst conducting Orchestre National de France in Tchaikovsky's Sixth Symphony in Paris, 84-year-old Kurt Masur lost his balance and fell from the podium. The concert was abandoned. An initial bulletin from his doctors suggested that he had suffered no broken bones. However, a subsequent scan revealed that he has fractured his left shoulder blade.

He plans to resume conducting activities at the start of next season in September 2012.
