BBC Philharmonic Extends Free Concert Festival Across The North Of England

Following the success of the inaugural BBC Philharmonic Presents… festival in 2011, the orchestra has announced the line-up for a second festival of live concerts with all the BBC’s national radio networks and in partnership with BBC North.

Over 3,000 people attended the first festival of free concerts in the BBC Philharmonic’s purpose-built performance space at MediaCityUK in 2011. Additionally over 11 million people listened to or watched the inaugural festival in 2011 across the BBC’s radio networks and Red Button service.

Launching in September 2012, the eight free live concerts will feature a number of unique collaborations with artists including Richard Hawley, The xx and the Guy Barker Jazz Orchestra and the first ever collaboration between the BBC Philharmonic and BBC Asian Network.

Richard Wigley, General Manager, The BBC Philharmonic, said: “The return of BBC Philharmonic Presents is an irresistible mixture of collaborations with Britain’s finest artists and producers. With the full symphonic power of the BBC Philharmonic’s ninety professional musicians, this is a unique opportunity to bring the highest standard of music making to new audiences in collaboration with the BBC’s national radio networks and BBC North.”

This year the festival will perform in venues across the North of England, as well as in the BBC Philharmonic Studio at MediaCityUK in Salford.

The seven concerts are:

8 September - Richard Hawley on BBC Radio 6 Music, Sheffield
14 September - Kermode & Mayo’s Film Review - A James Bond Special on BBC 5 live, MediaCityUK, Salford
14 September - Friday Night is Music Night, Bond and Beyond on BBC Radio 2, MediaCityUK, Salford
19 September - The xx Symphony on BBC Radio 1, Bridlington

12 November - Concert with BBC Asian Network, Bradford
6 December - In Concert on BBC Radio 2, MediaCityUK, Salford
14 December - The Listening Project on BBC Radio 4, MediaCityUK, Salford

Richard Hawley will be performing with an orchestra in the UK for the first time in his career when he performs with the BBC Philharmonic in Sheffield. Also The xx will be performing a specially commissioned original work following the success of the orchestra’s collaboration with Nero for BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra in 2011.

Tickets will be made available over the next few weeks at including full details on how to apply and closing dates for applications. Tickets for all the concerts are free and will be allocated via random draws.
