The celebrated conductor, composer and pianist André Previn has a birthday today, Monday 6 April 2015. However, although most of the documentation concerning him states that he was born in 1929, he himself says he entered the world in 1930.
Successful in his Hollywood years, in the classical and jazz worlds, and as the consummate creator of film, concert and opera-house scores, not forgetting his brilliant appearance in the Morecambe & Wise Show (“Grieg’s Piano Concerto by Grieg”), other TV programmes, and as a recording artist (particularly for EMI, Telarc and Deutsche Grammophon), Previn has been an international musician and a household name for many decades, heading up such glittering ensembles as the LSO, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony and Los Angeles Philharmonic.
London concert-goers are no doubt looking forward to the conductor’s imminent return to the LSO, on June 10 at the Barbican Centre, for a programme of his own Violin Concerto (written for and featuring Anne-Sophie Mutter) and a Previn speciality, Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony.
In the meantime, Classical Source sends André Previn the very best of birthday greetings.
