Congratulations to Harry Rabinowitz MBE, the British conductor and composer of film and television music, who today reaches the grand age of 100. He was born on 26 March 1916 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
He has conducted the scores for numerous films, including Chariots of Fire (1981), Return to Oz (1985), The Remains of the Day (1993), The English Patient (1996), The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) and Cold Mountain (2003). He has also composed music for various television programmes, including – beyond Shostakovich’s The Gadfly – Reilly, Ace of Spies (1983).
Although these days he is retired, it is reported that Mr Rabinowitz continues to play the piano every day. In June 2015 he was the guest on Desert Island Discs (BBC Radio 4), and he divides his time between Portland (Oregon) and Provence.
