It is very sad news that Neville Marriner has died. The violinist and conductor (who studied the latter art with Pierre Monteux), the founder of the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, a member of the Philharmonia Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra, and one of the most-recorded of musicians, passed away this morning, October 2.
Among his orchestral appointments were as Music Director of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and then of the Minnesota Orchestra; in the late-1980s Sir Neville was also principal conductor of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra.
Neville Marriner, CH, CBE – who was knighted in 1985 – was born in Lincolnshire, England on 15 April 1924.
Further appreciations will follow.
