The title of the new work by Helmut Lachenmann, the grand maître of contemporary music, is My melodies – music for eight horns and orchestra. The piece was comissioned by Munich’s musica viva concert series for the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. The world première of My melodies will take place in Hercules Hall in Munich on Thursday, June 7, 2018, with a second performance on Friday, June 8. Hungarian conductor Peter Eötvös will be at the helm for both performances.
“It was many years ago”, recalls Winrich Hopp, musica viva’s artistic director, “that I asked Helmut Lachenmann to compose a new work for the BRSO, and this is in fact the first work he’s ever written for this splendid orchestra. I kept all my ideas and suggestions to myself, knowing that any comission given to Helmut Lachenmann must be carte blanche. That musica viva and the BRSO now have this work when the orchestra comprises such an extraordinary group of performers is a great gift. The horn soloists are thrilled!”
The composer, who has thus far shied away from public comment, will talk about the piece for the first time as well his music in general in a musica viva Talk, on 4 May at 6 pm, Allerheiligen-Hofkirche, Residenzstrasse 1, 80333 Munich. Taking part in the conversation will also be the Swiss composer Beat Furrer, who will be honored the day before with this year’s Ernst von Siemens Musikpreis, and the writer Michael Krüger, who will moderate the discussion.
The June 8, 2018, concert will be broadcast live via video stream on www.br-music-viva.de and on www.BR-KLASSIK.de/concert. A live recording of the concert will be broadcast on radio by BR Klassik at 8:05pm on June 19, 2018.
