Terence Blanchard returns as the DSO’s Erb Jazz Chair and will lead “The Movie Music of Spike Lee and Terence Blanchard” concert featuring the DSO and R&B powerhouse Ledisi in season finale

Detroit, (April 17, 2018) – The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) today announced its 2018-2019 Paradise Jazz Series, and subscriptions are on sale now. The season will kick off on Friday, October 26 with a rare duo performance by Dianne Reeves and Christian McBride.

Trumpeter, bandleader, composer, and multiple Grammy Award-winner Terence Blanchard remains the DSO’s Fred A. & Barbara M. Erb Jazz Creative Chair and the host of the Paradise Jazz Series. Blanchard has scored numerous films by Spike Lee (including Mo’ Better Blues, Malcolm X, Love & Basketball, and many others), and the 2018-2019 season finale is a concert celebrating the movie music of Spike Lee featuring the Terence Blanchard Quintet and the DSO, joined by vocalists Quiana Lynell and Ledisi.

In between, the star-studded Paradise Jazz Series roster includes a rare supergroup performance by the Spring Quartet, comprising Jack DeJohnette, Joe Lovano, Esperanza Spalding, and Leo Genovese; The Music of John Coltrane featuring a unique double bill with Detroit saxophone giant James Carter and Poncho Sanchez; a double bill featuring Israeli clarinetist Anat Cohen and drummer Kendrick Scott; a celebration of the beloved music from A Charlie Brown Christmas at the hands of the Cyrus Chestnut Trio, and much more.

The DSO is proud to be among the few major orchestras with regular jazz programming on its mainstage. Orchestra Hall, the home of the DSO that celebrates its centennial in 2019, was renamed and repurposed as the Paradise Theatre from 1941-1951, attracting the biggest names in jazz, swing, and blues. The Paradise Jazz Series of today honors that rich history.
