Chamber music festival Midsummer Music returns to the Chilterns on 21-23 June 2018 for its 10th edition, a weekend-long collegial celebration of chamber music in Old Amersham’s Grade I listed St Mary’s Church.

Led by founders and Artistic Directors Paul and Bjørg Lewis, the 2018 edition presents five concerts of mixed chamber music repertoire, with invited artists including, among others, Imogen Cooper, Lawrence Power, Matthew Hunt, Rick Stotijn, and Trio Mediæval vocal ensemble. Highlights from the varied programmes include Haydn piano sonatas, Mozart String and Horn Quintets, Nordic folk songs, Russian viola miniatures and the majestic Schubert String Octet. International performers who have appeared at Midsummer Music over the past ten years include pianists Jean-Efflam Bavouzet and Steven Osborne, violinists Lisa Batiashvili and Veronika Eberle, and singers Allan Clayton and Mark Padmore, while Alfred Brendel has appeared as guest speaker and is the festival’s Honorary President. The festival is also involved in outreach activities for the local primary school, through workshops and concerts.

“While the festival has always aimed for the highest musical standards, Midsummer Music remains, as it started, very much a ‘home-made’ event’ commented Paul and Bjørg Lewis, who decided in 2009 to start a festival near to where they have lived for many years. ‘Looking to the future, our idea is to keep the festival small and personal in scale, but wide-ranging and long lasting in the impact it has on those it reaches. We hope that this personal quality is something that characterises our festival in a special way, and leaves our audience with a sense of having experienced something memorable and meaningful.’
