Doris Soffel has withdrawn from the upcoming new production of Samuel Barber’s Vanessa at Glyndebourne Festival 2018. The role of Old Baroness will now be sung by Rosalind Plowright.
Rosalind Plowright is one of Britain’s leading opera singers. Her career spans more than 45 years during which time she has sung at international opera houses including the Royal Opera House, Teatro alla Scala, Opéra national de Paris, Wiener Staatsoper, Bayerische Staatsoper, Grand Théâtre de Genève and the Arena di Verona.
Her relationship with Glyndebourne began in 1973 when she was a member of the Glyndebourne Chorus, going on to perform the roles of Countess Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni for the Glyndebourne Tour. This will be her first principal role at the Glyndebourne Festival and follows her acclaimed performance of the same role in the Wexford Festival production of Vanessa in 2016.
In 2007 she was awarded an OBE for services to music.
Vanessa is at the 2018 Glyndebourne Festival from 5 - 26 August and is broadcast live to cinemas and online on 14 August.
