On Thursday 25 October, Sir Mark Elder opens his season with the Hallé conducting Elgar’s Symphony No.2. The concert’s first half features principal cello and viola players, Nicholas Trygstad and Timothy Pooley, who will assume the roles of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza in R. Strauss’s Don Quixote.
Francesco Piemontesi joins Sir Mark Elder and the Hallé to perform the first of Mendelssohn’s Piano Concertos in three performances at The Bridgewater Hall (7, 8 & 11 November). The concerts also feature the two preludes from Acts I and II of Wagner’s Lohengrin, paired with the suite from Wagner’s comic opera Die Meistersinger.
On Thursday 29 November Sir Mark Elder conducts the orchestra in three contrasting masterpieces, all composed within eighteen years of each other. Schoenberg’s Romantic Verklärte Nacht for string orchestra shares the first half of the concert with Satie’s ballet score Parade, while the second half features Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring.
