THE NAMM SHOW 2019 - ERIC WHITACRE TO BE PRESENTED WITH THE SUPPORTMUSIC CHAMPION AWARD FOR MUSIC EDUCATION ADVOCACY

“Nothing builds empathy, compassion and community like making music together. Nothing. It should be required at every grade level.” Eric Whitacre

Whitacre will be presented with the SupportMusic Champion award and will be performing at The Grand Rally for Music Education at The NAMM Show 2019 (Anaheim, CA, US) on January 26. Previous recipients include Vanessa Carlton (2018), and Senators Jay Rockefeller and Lamar Alexander. Whitacre’s ongoing work with music educators, in schools and colleges as well as his pioneering programs in the digital space have won accolades worldwide. His Virtual Choirs have created global communities of musicians from all backgrounds, also making the projects accessible to those with learning difficulties and hearing/sight impairment. The Virtual Choir participated in a project “Deep Field” revealed in 2018, a collaboration with the Space Telescope Science Institute at the nexus of music and science. And in a simple tribute to music educators, Whitacre runs a Teacher of the Week accolade on his website: http://ericwhitacre.com/totw

ERIC WHITACRE ANNOUNCES A NEW CHORAL RADIO STATION EXCLUSIVELY ON APPLE MUSIC: BLISS RADIO

Eric Whitacre has collaborated with Apple Music on Bliss Radio, the new choral radio station. Bliss will complement Apple Music’s existing radio stations: Classical (iconic masterpieces), Simply Piano, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Opera.

“To me, the voice is the most perfect instrument of them all. It brings such deep emotion to music and touches our hearts. Music itself is a fundamental form of communication and a fundamental form of expression. And by fundamental, I mean that it’s built in—it’s hardwired into our systems. For Bliss Radio, we have drawn together music of astonishing beauty and serenity with transcendent moments. My first choices for Bliss Radio are from the Renaissance, a period that saw the introduction of polyphony - an explosion of new music and choral works. Music from this period is as close to perfect as we are likely to get it. Much of it is written for sacred spaces, meticulously crafted to lift the listener’s spirit to the highest heaven.” Eric Whitacre

THE SACRED VEIL - TO BE PREMIERED AT WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL Los Angeles, 16, 17 February 2019

Three years ago, after a visit from his longtime collaborator and friend, lyricist and poet Charles Anthony (Tony) Silvestri, Eric Whitacre found a poem Silvestri had left for him sitting on his piano. Silvestri had lost his wife to cancer 10 years previously, losing his soul mate and leaving him to bring up their two young children. He had not been able to write about the experience for a long time. The poem he left for Whitacre was called The Other Side of Eternity and Whitacre immediately sat down and began to set it to music. The resulting piece is part of a broader work based on Silvestri’s poetry addressing all stages of life and death called The Sacred Veil that will receive its world premiere by the Los Angeles Master Chorale conducted by Whitacre at Walt Disney Concert Hall on February 16, 17, 2019.

Scored for chorus, solo soprano, strings, piano and percussion this delicate and touching piece deals with an issue that touches us all.
