Ernst Haefliger the Swiss tenor was born on 6 July 1919 and died on 17 March 2007. He was particularly regarded as an interpreter of the role of the Evangelist in Bach's Passions and for his singing of Mozart. Schubert's song-cycles were another notable part of Haefliger's repertoire. As relatively recently as 1995, Haefliger sung Schubert's "Winterreise" at the Wigmore Hall in London; in this he was accompanied at the piano by his son Andreas. Ernst Haefliger also appeared at the Proms in 2002, in the speaking part of Schoenberg's "Gurrelieder". Ernst Haefliger was also a champion of new music as well as being active as a recording artist; his discography includes two notable versions of Mahler's "Das Lied von der Erde", one conducted by Bruno Walter, the other by Eugen Jochum.
