Composers of large-scale symphonies here writing expansive chamber music. Bruckner’s lofty String Quintet centres on an extended and wonderfully rapt Adagio; this performance of the work is gloriously innate. Franz Schmidt (1874-1939) followed (somewhat) in Bruckner’s musical footsteps; his Piano Quintet (1926) is lively and touching, Viennese-inflected, the opening of the third movement especially expressive: a lovely work, beautifully performed.
