A super, super recording! The ‘jazz’ of Milhaud and Stravinsky pushed boundaries, so too did Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue for Paul Whiteman, especially in this spunky original version. The ‘standards’ are foot-tapping and gloriously sentimental. The performers let their hair down and have a ball. The playing is just great – brilliant banjo! – and Bernstein’s scintillating piece is the perfect close.
