Soundbite 60: A sixty-word précis-review of the latest CD releases

Pieces by Albéniz, Brahms, Chopin, Handel, Liszt, Schubert and Weber
Alfred Cortot (piano)

Recorded in 1925 & 1926
Duration: 79 minutes
Reviewed: October 2007
Popular repertoire from a pianist of the past: Cortot’s individual manner – both showman and searcher – is redolent of a thankfully-preserved-on-recordings era and which points up what can be lacking today. Cortot illuminates these pieces with a mix of respect, imagination and unpredictability – and some ‘wrong’ notes! But these are real performances captured for posterity and sounding fine in Obert-Thorn’s transfers.
