Sarteano Chamber Choral Conducting Workshop w/Simon Carrington, Bronislawa Falinska and Brian O'Connell
SARTEANO CHAMBER CHORAL CONDUCTING WORKSHOP, ITALY ( TUSCANY ) 31 July - 7 August 2010 with Carrington, O'Connell and Falinska This intensive and interpersonal conducting workshop is geared for music educators and choral conductors with strong vocal ability who are interested in rehearsing and performing chamber choral music. We heartily welcome qualified singers who are interested in attending the workshop in a non-conducting capacity; who love to sing in a chamber group environment and/or are very specifically looking to learn rehearsal and conducting techniques. You will be part of a twenty-four to twenty-eight member ensemble that will prepare and perform a cappella choral music from the sixteenth to the twentieth century. Up to two graduate credits are available through The Boston Conservatory. There are three possible tiers of participation: Full Conductor, Conducting Auditor, Singer. Each Full Conductor will be assigned a piece for their daily podium time in the master class; they will also conduct this piece in the final concert. You may also choose to participate as either a Conducting Auditor or Singer. Included in the price of participating as a Conducting Auditor will be a private half-hour conducting session with Simon. The Master Class uses the Workshop ensemble as its laboratory, so everyone receives the benefits of each master class. The two-part morning session will consist of Group Vocal Pedagogy and clinics on developing a vital chamber choir. Broni Falinska, our visiting artist in Vocal Pedagogy, will again be joining us for daily ateliers using the Rohmert Method of Functional Voicetraining. This approach guides the singer towards an awareness of the voice not usually addressed by most conventional singing methods. Get ready for a sensorial exploration of the voice, and to explore how self-perception works in the combination of "hearing-feeling-seeing." Brian O'Connell will be leading clinics on exploring connections between movement and musical/textual concepts and strategies for building cohesive chamber choirs. The afternoon sessions will consist solely of conducting Master Classes with Simon Carrington. This year we are also delighted to offer a Q&A/Dialogue session with Simon. For a detailed description of the workshop, tuition costs (Farewell Dinner included), and an online application please visit Visit Our website http://www.sarteanochoralworkshop.com Contact: Gail Leicher Tel: + 1 781-652-0158, or Email sarteanochoral@rcn.com

NEW London A Cappella Festival 13-16 January 2010

London’s diverse a cappella community come together under one roof to celebrate the unaccompanied human voice. Curated by the world-famous 5-time Grammy-winning vocal group the Swingle Singers, the inaugural London A Cappella Festival at London’s Kings Place showcases some of the best of the UK’s choral, jazz, contemporary, and gospel ensembles, including special guests, with music ranging from sacred Renaissance polyphony to crowd-pleasing pop and blistering beatbox.

In addition to the Swingle Singers, acts include internationally-acclaimed gospel stars London Adventist Chorale (Sainsbury Choir of the Year; BBC Gem Best Choir award), Grammy-nominated early music ensemble Stile Antico, and hot young pop/jazz group VOCES8, as well as many other groups from the huge local a cappella community.

Free foyer performances and afternoon workshops will also help to capture the imagination of people young and old, in various spaces within Kings Place. Education for the masses will be an integral part of the festival’s commitments; whether the festival-goers are experienced singers or only have experience of singing in the shower, the opportunities for sharing and learning at the London A Cappella Festival will be limitless.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Immediately after the release of their previous album, The Lost Christmas Eve, in 2004 Trans-Siberian Orchestra started work on their fifth studio release, and second non-Christmas album. Now the album is a fact and is already in the stores. Night Castle presents a story that spans in 21 songs and two discs. Fans have been waiting for Trans-Siberian Orchestra new release for five years, quite a long time, but the unique rock band has prepared something really special that will satisfy the longing of every fan. Night Castle proves again that the great success the orchestral-rock group has earned in its 15-year history is fully deserved. The show they’ve prepared offers the full range of entertainment with special pyro effects, lighting effects and, of course, the incredible music of the musicians from Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Night Castle is more than a rock opera, says Paul O'Neill, founder of the orchestra. PLANTAGENET Launch Concert
Saturday 24 October 7.30pm St John's, Smith Square (www.sjss.org.uk) PLANTAGENET Launch Concert Tickets £12/£8 Missa del Cid Judith Weir (c25') for narrator and 10 solo voices, narrated by Hannah Thomson Prayer of Imperfect Desire Hilary Campbell, text by Ryan Wood (c15') for 16 solo voices INTERVAL Meadows of Gold Jamie Brown (c45') for narrator, mezzo soprano, baritone, choir and chamber orchestra. Narrator: Eamonn O’Dwyer, mezzo soprano solo Kathryn McAdam Performed by the Blossom Street Singers and the King William Singers and Orchesra All three works take the absurdity of war, or the importance of mutual respect and understanding, as their theme. The concert is not only a launchpad for PLANTAGENET but is also raising money for Action for Brazil's Children, a humanitarian aid charity. PLANTAGENET (www.plantagenetproject.com) is a new musical/cross-art group which aims to provide a creative platform for young artists to collaborate, produce new work and have regular performance opportunities, taking projects to classical music halls as well as visual and dramatic art venues, and workshops for schools. Each of its six members specialise in one field but bring a wide range of skills: Jamie Brown composer – also experienced arts administrator Hilary Campbell composer – also soprano and conductor Kathryn McAdam mezzo-soprano – also teacher and workshop leader Danny Standing baritone – also performance artist Hannah Thomson actor – also poet and workshop leader Ryan Wood poet – also workshop leader ASSOCIATE ARTISTS: The Blossom Street Singers (vocal ensemble) www.blossomstreetsingers.com In future years we hope to take on more artists from a wider range of backgrounds, including choreographers/dancers, and visual artists. The six original members were chosen for a specific project: a song cycle, in which two sides of the same love story are told from both male and female perspectives. Involving two singers, the cycle (with words by both poets and music by both composers) will chart the history of a relationship and hopefully create insights into how things can go right and wrong without proper understanding between the sexes… The cycle will be ready for premiere in 2010, but first we are concentrating on a launch concert at St John’s Smith Square in October, in which the six members will be joined by Blossom Street, the King William Singers and Orchestra, plus actor Eamonn O’Dwyer, for a gala concert.

Lunchtime piano recital - 4 Chopin Ballades and Debussy's 'Suite Bergamasque'
Tuesday October 6th - 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. St George's Church, 44 Queen Square, Holborn, London WC1N 3AH Admission free - donations welcome. 4 Ballades - Chopin Suite Bergamasque - Debussy A programme of arguably Chopin's most musically intense and technically demanding compositions, his 4 Ballades, followed by Debussy's 'Suite Bergamasque', four movements that are a great example of his early style and that include the achingly beautiful 'Clair de Lune'. Phil's eclectic and innate musicianship combines with technical mastery to make him a musician of rare versatility and range. He champions ways of making music based on fluency and natural expressiveness. http://www.sgtm.org/Groups/47093/St_Georges_Holborn.aspx
