Lunchtime piano recital - 10 Rachmaninov and 3 Debussy Preludes
Friday September 11th - 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. St John's Church, Waterloo Road (corner of Exton Street), London SE1 8TY. Admission free - donations welcome. 10 Preludes, Op 23 - Rachmaninov; 3 Preludes ( 'Ondine', 'Feux d'artifice', 'Les fées sont d'exquises danseuses') - Debussy. Music may evoke all kinds of sentiments and emotions: joy, sadness, nostalgia, passion but these words are inadequate generalities that cannot do any justice to the nuances that music expresses and language simply cannot. This music is a prelude to life, an invitation to allow archetypal messages to enter your world and flood your whole being. Phil's performances combine engaging presentation with powerful and passionate musicality. His mission is to generate a level of excitement about the piano and its expressive possibilities that has not been known since the nineteenth century when it was a relatively new invention. The combination of Phil's virtuoso technique and his fresh and natural way of playing brings energy and excitement to both old and new music in a way that challenges stereotyped preconceptions about musical genres. http://www.stjohnswaterloo.co.uk/content/events/concerts.php

Somerset Chamber Choir with Emma Kirkby

25 July 2009, 7pm at Wells Cathedral.

Somerset Chamber Choir celebrate their 25th Anniversary with a spectacular concert of baroque masterpieces:

Vivaldi - Gloria
Handel - Dixit Dominus
Charpentier - Te Deum, plus
Jonathan Harvey - The Angels

with

Emma Kirkby (soprano)
Sophie Bevan (soprano)
Tim Mead (counter-tenor)
Thomas Hobbs (tenor)
Derek Welton (baritone)
Somerset Chamber Choir
Canzona
Graham Caldbeck (conductor)

Tickets (£10 - £25) are available from MusicBox 01275 349010. Early booking is advised!

This year marks the 25th birthday of the Somerset Chamber Choir which, since its formation, has consistently promoted the world’s greatest choral music within Somerset and beyond, in a spectacular sequence of wide-ranging and imaginatively programmed concerts, in partnership with many of the UK’s finest singers and instrumentalists.

In 2009, the musical world also celebrates a significant anniversary of George Frideric Handel – the 250th anniversary of his death. In a wonderfully celebratory programme, the choir marks its 25-year existence by performing great works spanning 25 years not only by Handel, but also by his illustrious contemporaries, Marc-Antoine Charpentier and Antonio Vivaldi from the Rome, Paris and Venice of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. All to be performed on the 25th July, naturally!

Beginning with the trumpet and drums of Charpentier’s magnificent Te Deum - dating from around 1692, and later made well known by the use of its uplifting Prelude as the signature tune for the Eurovision Song Contest! - through Handel’s sparkling youthful work, Dixit Dominus, first performed in Rome in 1707, to Vivaldi’s vibrant and ever-popular Gloria of c1713-17, composed for the Ospedale della Pietą in Venice, the concert provides an exciting Grand Tour of some the finest Baroque choral music ever composed.

However, the here and now (and the eternal) is also present as we celebrate the British composer Jonathan Harvey’s 70th birthday year, with the inclusion of The Angels, a hauntingly beautiful 4-minute work composed for the 1994 Carol Service in King’s College Chapel in Cambridge.

The choir is again honoured to be joined by world-famous soprano, Dame Emma Kirkby, together with four of the UK’s most outstanding young soloists – Sophie Bevan, Tim Mead, Thomas Hobbs and Derek Welton. We are delighted, too, to welcome back the leading Baroque ensemble, Canzona (director Theresa Caudle), with whom the choir has, in the past, given many memorable performances.

We hope that you will join us for Handel’s anniversary and for Somerset Chamber Choir’s silver celebration this July, in the incomparable setting of Wells Cathedral.

La Boheme (Puccini) from New Devon Opera :: 24, 25 & 28 July

'They meet, they fall in love, they split, she returns, she dies''! (That's tenor Rolando Villazón's cryptic ten-second plot summary of Puccini's La Bohčme!)

NDO’s choice this year is one that has stayed at the top of the opera repertoire for the past 100 years. This is a tale that tugs at the heart-strings with Puccini’s gorgeous melodies and, through its timeless story of love, laughter and despair. Wonderful melodies (sung in English by an international cast of young opera singers); a 19 piece orchestra; a community chorus drawn from the south west; vibrant costumes, set and lighting - all staged in the courtyard of one of Devon's most lovely country houses.

Bring your own picnic (or enjoy a delicious buffet supper); wander through the grounds to the lake and relax while you take in the beautiful views of distant Dartmoor. Come with your friends and enjoy a glorious evening of gorgeous music and intense drama. Even our notoriously difficult weather is promising to improve!! But, if a shower should strike, the comfortable upholstered seating will be sited under protective awnings.

In aid of the Devon Branch of SENSE – the charity that helps deafblind people

In the Courtyard of Ugbrooke House, Chudleigh, Devon, TQ13 0AD

A Plucked Concert for Londoners

LONDON MANDOLIN FESTIVAL
Church of Our Most Holy Redeemer, Clerkenwell

The London Mandolin Festival brings together some of the finest mandolin and guitar players from all around London for two concerts on May 17.

Everybody has heard of the ukulele popularised by the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain but how about the ukulele’s not too disant cousin, the mandolin? Did you know at the height of the mandolin’s popularity in the 30s, there was at least one mandolin orchestra in every borough of London?

With decreasing interest in the instrument, many mandolin orchestras have since closed down or are significantly smaller. The 5 remaining orchestras have also faced the possibility of closure and still face that danger as its numbers age and as separate orchestras are unable to perform substantial works fit for the public.

Mandolin, Mandola, Guitar and Double Bass Players from all over London were approached to come together as one orchestra at the Big Wheel Studios Clerkenwell and practice set pieces for the London Mandolin Festival Concert. The concept, inspired by similar Australian Mandolin Festivals, aims to reverse the trend and encourage interest in the mandolin orchestras.

One the feature pieces of the festival is the contemporary work Four Sea Pictures by Eileen Pakenham. Pakenham, who resided nearby London, composed many works for mandolin orchestras and was a part of the now defunct London Mandolin Ensemble. Pakenham unfortunately passed away in between the mandolin festival rehearsals. The fervent hope of the festival is that the concert will inspire composers to continue Pakenham’s legacy and write new composition for mandolin orchestra.

So if you want to hear classical music like you have never heard before then check out the London Mandolin Festival Concert. With over 40 players committed to the festival, this will be the biggest mandolin orchestra that London has not seen in decades.

The First London Mandolin Festival will perform its one time only concerts on May 17th. Tickets are from £5. http://londonmandolinfestival.org.uk

Classical BRIT awards 2009

HERBIE HANCOCK & LANG LANG, JONAS KAUFMANN AND ALISON BALSOM TO PERFORM AT

THE CLASSICAL BRIT AWARDS 2009 WITH NS&I

10TH ANNIVERSARY CLASSICAL BRIT AWARDS

To be attended by

HRH The Duchess of Cornwall

London, Tuesday 5 May:  The BPI, representing UK record companies, is delighted to announce that legendary jazz pianist and composer Herbie Hancock will team up with Manchurian pianist Lang Lang for a special performance to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of The Classical BRIT Awards with NS&I. Completing the line-up for this year are Female Artist of the Year nominee, trumpeter Alison Balsom and, making his debut Classical BRIT Awards appearance, tenor Jonas Kaufmann.

Taking place at the Royal Albert Hall on 14 May, this very special evening, celebrating 10 glorious years of The Classical BRIT Awards, will be attended by HRH The Duchess of Cornwall.

For the first time at The Classical BRIT Awards, two grand pianos will take centre stage as the celebrated jazz musician and experimentalist Herbie Hancock joins forces with Chinese sensation Lang Lang. Featuring on the NS&I Album of the Year nominated ŌMusic Of The SpheresÕ by Mike Oldfield, Lang Lang returns to The Classical BRITs for the second time following his performance at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. This collaboration with Herbie Hancock will be the first on UK soil before they return to the Royal Albert Hall for an evening together on July 11.

One of the great success stories of The Classical BRIT Awards, over the last few years, is female trumpeter Alison Balsom. The only instrumentalist nominated this year for Female Artist of the Year, Alison returns to The Classical BRITs for the second time, her first since being awarded Young British Classical Performer in 2006. The only female trumpeter with an exclusive major label deal, Alison Balsom has opened up the appeal of trumpet music through broadening the repertoire and making accessible classical recordings that show the instrument in a more versatile and less masculine light.

Making his Classical BRIT Awards debut is acclaimed Munich born tenor, Jonas Kaufmann. Internationally recognised as one of the most important artists in the classical world today, he made sensational debuts in many of the worldÕs leading opera houses. Following the release of his internationally best selling, debut solo album ŌRomantic AriasÕ from Decca, Jonas Kaufmann will release an album of German Operatic Arias and Scenes.

Completing the 10th Anniversary celebrations, it has been confirmed that HRH The Duchess of Cornwall will be attending the event for the second time. In addition to attending, HRH The Duchess of Cornwall will present the Lifetime Achievement award to Josˇ Carreras. HRH is the patron of the London Chamber Orchestra (LCO), who will be accompanying all performers at the event.

Chairman of The Classical BRIT Awards Committee, Decca Managing Director, Dickon Stainer said: "We are particularly thrilled that HRH The Duchess of Cornwall, who is the patron of the London Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Christopher Warren-Green, has agreed to attend The Classical BRIT Awards in this, the 10th Anniversary show. It promises to be a very special evening"

This year The Classical BRITs is particularly delighted to partner with the Mail On Sunday to produce a commemorative 10th Anniversary CD.  This will be available to all readers on Sunday 17th May.

2009 marks the 6th consecutive year with sponsors NS&I [whoÕs award winning site nsandi.com helps de-mystify where savers should consider investing their savings]

The full performers line-up for The Classical BRIT Awards 2009 with NS&I includes Josˇ Carreras, Pl‡cido Domingo, Katherine Jenkins, Jonas Kaufmann, Faryl Smith, The Priests, Alison Balsom, Herbie Hancock and Lang Lang.

Hosted by Myleene Klass, The Classical BRIT Awards 2009 with NS&I will be broadcast on ITV1 on Tuesday 19 May at 10:35pm and repeated on ITV3 on Sunday 24 May at 7:45pm.

In addition to the Lifetime Achievement Award there will be seven awards handed out on the night as follows:

N S & I Album of the Year

Male Artist of the year

Female artist of the year

Composer of the Year

Young British Classical Performer or Group

Soundtrack of the year

CriticsÕ Award

The Classical BRIT Awards were established in 2000 to recognise the outstanding achievements of classical musicians and the growth of classical music sales in the UK.  The awards have proved their vital importance to the UK music industry with the huge impact the event has on record sales of those artists performing, winning and nominated.

2009 marks the 6th consecutive year with sponsors NS&I.

Tim Mack, Head of Marketing and Communications at NS&I says ŅWe are delighted to be actively supporting The Classical BRIT awards yet again this year. NS&I has a long standing association with classical music. Our involvement in The Classical BRIT Awards builds on this association and fits very well with the interests of many of our customers.Ó

Tickets are available from the Royal Albert Hall box office on 020 7589 8212. Ticket prices remain the same as for the past five years and range from the most reasonable show only ticket at £20 to £250 for a full dinner/show experience.

Stile Antico to tour again with Sting in Far East & Australia

Following the success of last year's concerts, British early music vocal ensemble Stile Antico will join Sting on a tour of Australia and Asia, bringing music from Sting's critically acclaimed album 'Songs from the Labyrinth', to a further two continents. The tour, which opens at the Sydney Opera House on 30th November, includes performances in Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai, Tokyo and Osaka (tour itinerary included below).

'Songs from the Labyrinth' began as a Deutsche Grammophon recording project in 2006 which surpassed all expectations by debuting at the top of the classical charts in the US, UK, France, Canada & Germany. It is Sting's personal tribute to the lute songs of British composer John Dowland (1563-1626). Stile Antico accompanied Sting in all his European tour dates since the release of the album, which has seen performances at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Berliner Philharmonie, the Konzerthaus Vienna, among many others. They will be joined again for this tour by esteemed lutenist, Edin Karamazov.

http://www.londonlyricopera.com/673/index.html London Lyric Opera is proud to present a concert performance of Richard Wagner's music drama Der fliegende Holländer arguably one of the greatest operas of the romantic tradition. Lionel Friend will conduct the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, The Philharmonia Chorus and a stunning cast of International soloists including Gweneth-Ann Jeffers making her role debut as Senta, James Hancock singing the Holländer and Jeffrey Lloyd-Roberts as the spurned lover, Erik. An exciting opportunity to hear Richard Wagner's first masterpiece accompanied by 78 players of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in concert at the Barbican. One performance only. Not to be missed. Premiered in Dresden in 1843, Der fliegende Holländer follows the story of a mariner, cursed to sail the oceans for eternity, whose only hope of redemption comes once every seven years; A young woman dreams of a man she can rescue through love. She imagines herself as the 'angel' who will save the eternally damned Dutchman. Will these two lost souls find their way to each other?
