Bristol International Piano Duo Festival 2009
St George's Bristol, renowned for having some of the best acoustics in Britain and the city’s Victoria Rooms host a new festival devoted to piano duos from 14th to 18th October. Artistic Directors Joseph Tong and Waka Hasegawa, who will perform themselves as Piano 4 Hands, have put together a wide-ranging programme of music ranging from Mozart and Schubert through to John McCabe and Chick Corea. The whole festival explores the vibrancy and versatility of the piano duo medium and its continued attraction for contemporary composers.
Joined by the European Union Chamber Orchestra, the Micallef-Inanga Duo and Piano Duo Tal and Groethuysen, the five day event promises a unique opportunity for audiences in the West Country to discover some decidedly unusual musical riches.

Each summer, emerging talents from around the world come to Portland for a week of intense study under the guidance of course director Kenneth Woods (Music Director- Oregon East Symphony), Christopher Zimmerman (Head of Orchestras and Conducting- Hartt School of Music) and David Hoose (Music Director- Cantata Singers, Boston and Director of Orchestras at Boston University). The Emerging Artists program is aimed at young conductors who are in the most advanced stages of their studies or already working professionally. EA repertoire for 2009 includes Verdi- Excerpts from "Aida," Mozart- Gran Partita for Winds, Beethoven- Piano Concerto no. 4 in G major, Debussy- Prelude a l'apres midi d'un faune and Haydn's Symphony no. 99.
The Discovery Program is geared towards young conductors beginning their advanced studies, instrumentalists and singers with an interest in conducting and music educators. DP repertoire for 2009 includes Haydn's Symphony no. 99, Beethoven's Symphony no. 4 and Debussy's Prelude a l'apres midi d'un Faune. DP students participate actively in all seminars and classes.
Students conduct the musicians of the Rose City Chamber Orchestra and work with professional soloists including concert pianist Rick Rowley and singers Alexis Hamilton, Esther Mae Moses and Brennen Guillory. Additional classes and seminars will be offered in score study, opera coaching and conducting and musicianship.
All conducting sessions are professionally filmed with CD-quality audio.
All EA students conduct in a final Showcase concert.

This year marks the 25th birthday of the Somerset Chamber Choir which, since its formation, has consistently promoted the world’s greatest choral music within Somerset and beyond, in a spectacular sequence of wide-ranging and imaginatively programmed concerts, in partnership with many of the UK’s finest singers and instrumentalists.
In 2009, the musical world also celebrates a significant anniversary of George Frideric Handel – the 250th anniversary of his death. In a wonderfully celebratory programme, the choir marks its 25-year existence by performing great works spanning 25 years not only by Handel, but also by his illustrious contemporaries, Marc-Antoine Charpentier and Antonio Vivaldi from the Rome, Paris and Venice of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. All to be performed on the 25th July, naturally!
Beginning with the trumpet and drums of Charpentier’s magnificent Te Deum - dating from around 1692, and later made well known by the use of its uplifting Prelude as the signature tune for the Eurovision Song Contest! - through Handel’s sparkling youthful work, Dixit Dominus, first performed in Rome in 1707, to Vivaldi’s vibrant and ever-popular Gloria of c1713-17, composed for the Ospedale della Pietą in Venice, the concert provides an exciting Grand Tour of some the finest Baroque choral music ever composed.
However, the here and now (and the eternal) is also present as we celebrate the British composer Jonathan Harvey’s 70th birthday year,with the inclusion of The Angels, a hauntingly beautiful 4-minute work composed for the 1994 Carol Service in King’s College Chapel in Cambridge.
The choir is again honoured to be joined by world-famous soprano, Dame Emma Kirkby, together with four of the UK’s most outstanding young soloists – Sophie Bevan, Tim Mead, Thomas Hobbs and Derek Welton. We are delighted, too, to welcome back the leading Baroque ensemble, Canzona (director Theresa Caudle), with whom the choir has, in the past, given many memorable performances.

A Plucked Concert for Londoners
LONDON MANDOLIN FESTIVAL

The London Mandolin Festival brings together some of the finest mandolin and guitar players from all around London for two concerts on May 17.
Everybody has heard of the ukulele popularised by the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain but how about the ukulele’s not too disant cousin, the mandolin? Did you know at the height of the mandolin’s popularity in the 30s, there was at least one mandolin orchestra in every borough of London?
With decreasing interest in the instrument, many mandolin orchestras have since closed down or are significantly smaller. The 5 remaining orchestras have also faced the possibility of closure and still face that danger as its numbers age and as separate orchestras are unable to perform substantial works fit for the public.
Mandolin, Mandola, Guitar and Double Bass Players from all over London were approached to come together as one orchestra at the Big Wheel Studios Clerkenwell and practice set pieces for the London Mandolin Festival Concert. The concept, inspired by similar Australian Mandolin Festivals, aims to reverse the trend and encourage interest in the mandolin orchestras.
One the feature pieces of the festival is the contemporary work Four Sea Pictures by Eileen Pakenham. Pakenham, who resided nearby London, composed many works for mandolin orchestras and was a part of the now defunct London Mandolin Ensemble. Pakenham unfortunately passed away in between the mandolin festival rehearsals. The fervent hope of the festival is that the concert will inspire composers to continue Pakenham’s legacy and write new composition for mandolin orchestra.
So if you want to hear classical music like you have never heard before then check out the London Mandolin Festival Concert. With over 40 players committed to the festival, this will be the biggest mandolin orchestra that London has not seen in decades.

Mike Oldfield, Lang Lang returns to The Classical BRITs for the second time following his performance at the
opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. This collaboration with Herbie Hancock will be the first on UK soil before they

One of the great success stories of The
Classical BRIT Awards, over the last few years, is female trumpeter Alison Balsom. The only instrumentalist nominated this year
for Female Artist of the Year, Alison returns to The Classical BRITs for the second time, her first since being awarded

A chance to hear music composed by the finalists of the first NCEM Composers Award presented in association with BBC Radio 3 and the Tallis Scholars.
This national award has attracted much interest and the shortlisted finalists will have the opportunity to work with composer Christopher Fox and York’s Ebor Singers to prepare their pieces in preparation for this public performance. The winner will be announced on the night and his/her piece will be performed by the Tallis Scholars in York Minster on Friday 10 July as part of the opening concert of the 2009 York Early Music Festival.

Beverley & East Riding Early Music Festival

This festival remains one of the cultural landmarks of the East Riding of Yorkshire – utilising some of the Riding’s finest historic venues, the festival embraces a mix of concerts, illustrated talks and educational activities.
Guest artists in 2009 include the effervescent Red Priest (not for the faint-hearted!) who open the festival (Toll Gavel Methodist Church, Fri 21); the acclaimed viol group Fretwork presenting a timely commemoration of the genius of Henry Purcell (Beverley Minster, Fri 22) and The Bach Players led by Nicolette Moonen presenting a programme of Bach’s instrumental arrangement of Pergolesi’s masterpiece ‘Stabat Mater’ (Beverley Minster, Sat 23).

Stile Antico to tour again with Sting in Far East & Australia
Following the success of last year's concerts, British early music vocal ensemble Stile Antico will join Sting on a tour of Australia and Asia, bringing music from Sting's critically acclaimed album 'Songs from the Labyrinth', to a further two continents. The tour, which opens at the Sydney Opera House on 30th November, includes performances in Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai, Tokyo and Osaka (tour itinerary included below).
'Songs from the Labyrinth' began as a Deutsche Grammophon recording project in 2006 which surpassed all expectations by debuting at the top of the classical charts in the US, UK, France, Canada & Germany. It is Sting's personal tribute to the lute songs of British composer John Dowland (1563-1626). Stile Antico accompanied Sting in all his European tour dates since the release of the album, which has seen performances at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Berliner Philharmonie, the Konzerthaus Vienna, among many others. They will be joined again for this tour by esteemed lutenist, Edin Karamazov.
