Looking back over Classical Source’s reviews of recordings during May, which includes two Mahler Songs of the Earth conducted by Jonathan Nott (I’d opt for the Bamberg/Tudor version: two singers are better than one!), I liked very much Edward Gardner’s BBCSO Elgar Symphony 1 on Chandos (which got even more impressive on repeated listens) and was delighted to discover three lovely chamber works by Max Bruch thanks to Hyperion and the Nash Ensemble. Record of the Month is Charles Ives’s very different Third and Fourth Symphonies, from Andrew Davis in Melbourne on Chandos, inimitable music that can charm and certainly challenge, with very rewarding results, and is superbly recorded.

***As a postscript, just to clarify how Classical Source uses stars for its reviews. Since April 2016 a star-rating is mandatory for anything generally available (a recording, a book…) and when there is a run of performances (an opera, a ballet…). Stars are not required for a concert unless a reviewer is of the opinion that something is exceptional (five stars) or quite the opposite (one); either is rare … ultimately it is the words that matter.***
