In many ways, Alicia de Larrocha is completely suited to Schumann’s sound world, its spurning of conventional forms while still adhering to the strictest of part-writing unleashing wave after wave of a kind of disciplined lyricism from the Spanish pianist. This is not always in evidence, though: the Kreisleriana are wonderful but the Fantasie can seem too restrained in places.
