One of Claudio Abbado’s first recordings: a major talent discovered in the company of an orchestra he would do great things with. This Mendelssohn coupling, as per Decca’s SXL LP, is a fine mix of the lyrical, dramatic and exuberant: notable performances of two popular symphonies responding positively to Abbado’s discernment and youthful flair and belying the years with ease.
