Helter-skelter Glinka confirms RNO’s virtuosity and unanimity; personal touches display Pletnev’s individuality. These Russian favourites and rarities find no dud – vivid, evocative music of beauty, fantasy, exhilaration and theatre. Shostakovich’s orchestration of Khovanshchina is preferable to the (here unstated) Rimsky-Korsakov version (such advice contrary to the booklet note though), yet Pletnev convinces; his belief is a hallmark throughout these recordings.
