Not Vernon Handley’s usual fare, but that’s the danger of typecasting. These innately musical accounts of popular Russian scores are neither Technicolor productions nor showpiece renditions – but there are plenty of good things. Hamlet is new to CD and is, unfortunately, somewhat over-processed here; the Hallé digital tapings are more natural-sounding and open. Still, a very enjoyable and generous collection.
