The Classical Source Recommends
by: Colin Anderson
As February finishes, my three best for the month are, first of all, Lyrita’s invaluable release of Humphrey Searle’s music – too good to ignore – followed by Juliette Bausor’s Signum disc of contrasted Flute Concertos, by Mozart and Carl Nielsen; Bausor is an impressive player, marrying perceptive musicianship and impeccable technique to compelling effect. Finally, my record of the month is Chandos’s superb coupling of two wonderful scores by Vaughan Williams, Job and the Ninth Symphony: great music from Andrew Davis and the Bergen Philharmonic that is powerful, poignant and potent.
