The Classical Source Recommends

The Editor’s Choice

by: Colin Anderson

Something new for Classical Source, if not particularly original as an idea, yours truly choosing a few reviewed recordings from the current month, or, if it’s now February, the month just gone; so, below are links to the traditional three, as in “things come in…”.

I have chosen Martyn Brabbins’s Elgar not because I wrote about it anyway, but simply because it is outstanding in every particular. My other choices are both reviewed by Curtis Rogers: an ambitious song-cycle by Ernst Krenek that covers a lot of stylistic ground – from echoes of Schubert to the then, 1929, new-fangled jazz, yet somehow these seeming disparities combine for a compelling whole; and Andrew Davis’s recent arrangement of Handel’s Messiah makes for enjoyable and enlightening listening, composer and conductor shaking hands warmly: I love it!
