by: Alexander Campbell

Shy Nemorino adores beautiful but capricious Adina. Purchasing a bottle of “Queen Isotta’s love potion” from itinerant quack Dr Dulcamara he proposes to Adina. Intoxicated by Bordeaux wine his over-confidence irritates her. In spite she engages herself to the self-regarding army recruitment sergeant, Belcore. In panic, penniless Nemorino buys more elixir from Dulcamara, funding this by enlisting with Belcore’s regiment. Village maidens now flock to him, to Adina’s discomfort. Dulcamara explains about his wondrous elixir, but in reality Nemorino has inherited a fortune. Adina finally recognises Nemorino’s worth, rejects Belcore and buys Nemorino’s freedom. Dulcamara has a product worth marketing!
