Donizetti: Lucia di Lammermoor

Enrico discovers his sister Lucia loves his rival Edgardo. Meeting secretly the couple exchange rings before Edgardo departs. Their covert correspondence is intercepted. Enrico persuades Lucia of Edgardo’s infidelity using a forged letter. Reluctantly, she agrees to marry Arturo to save Enrico from political disgrace. Edgardo interrupts the wedding and, finding signed marriage contracts, curses Lucia. Enrico challenges him. Later, Lucia appears amidst the revellers covered in blood and carrying Arturo’s dagger. Deranged, she has killed him and collapses imagining her marriage to Edgardo. News of Lucia’s death reaches Edgardo as he awaits Enrico. Recognising her fidelity he stabs himself.
