Brendel’s masterly assumption of Liszt’s extraordinary B minor Sonata has long been a wonder of analysis (both in writing and pianism). This, his second digital recording, is mighty in terms of perception and emotional identity. Funérailles is thunderously orated and eloquently insightful. Brendel captures the shorter pieces’ enigmas and harmonic strangeness to perfection. Outstanding sound. A collection to not miss.
