Blessed with excellent recorded sound – immediate and warm – Jeffrey Tate secures lively, detailed and affectionate accounts of two great Haydn symphonies. The E flat mixes majesty, exuberance and eloquence – and how beautifully the Adagio is turned. The famous ‘Clock’ enjoys mystery, roundness and charm, the tick-tocking of the second movement leaving no doubt as to the validity of the nickname.
