Two twentieth-century concerto-showpieces both popular and exacting. Paavo Järvi’s scrupulous and refined approach finds his Cincinnati musicians both virtuoso and sympathetic. The vivid recording can be overly-clinical and lack depth; and if an earthier response is needed to both scores there is much colour, vitality and sensitivity to energise one’s loudspeakers, especially in the Bartók, and Lutosławski’s ear-grabbing cacophonous Fanfare.
