Hildegard Behrens here relishes Berlioz’s cycle, delivering a sensuous performance of surprising delicacy – ‘Le spectre de la rose’ is particularly fine. The remainder of the disc belongs to Elly Ameling, who so excelled in French song. The fragrant exoticism of Ravel’s “Shéhérazade” is perfectly captured, as is the languid beauty of “L’invitation au voyage”. Both conductors ensure sensitive orchestral accompaniments.
