These are suave, polished accounts of the piano concertos, soloist and orchestra making the most of Liszt’s quasi-operatic writing by highlighting the motif-as-hero against a detailed orchestral landscape. Not a replacement for Richter and others, to be sure, but crisp, exciting and with just enough quirkiness to give that extra ‘edge’. Hungarian Fantasy and Totentanz provide spectacular book-ends. Well-balanced sound.
