Beautifully presented, with the LPs’ original cover reproduced, Vladimir Ashkenazy’s superb set of Rachmaninov’s Preludes continues to impress. The pianist’s eloquent and dynamic consideration, and his honesty, may not always equate to the transcendentalism this music needs, but his sensitivity is notable – this is sympathetic, imposing and big-hearted playing full of vitality and imagery. Kenneth Wilkinson’s engineering still sounds great!
