Solti’s Elgar 1 still has the power to thrill and move; it’s a great performance, one of thrust, flexibility and real emotion – the wonderful slow movement is very special here. In the South sounds better than it ever has, although the recessed image still compares unfavourably with the magnificent reproduction of the symphony. Decca’s presentation, notes and re-mastering are exemplary.
