Tchaikovsky’s delectable Suite No.3, its finale – the marvellous Theme and Variations (often played separately) – offering a microcosm of the composer’s genius, is crammed-full of beauty and ingenuity. Maazel and the VPO are lavish in their presentation. Ansermet and the SRO are plainer (but no less perceptive) in their revealing of Tchaikovsky’s orchestration of a Mozart miscellany: a very attractive confection.
