Powerful, evocative and rigorous, the Third of William Schuman (1910-92) is one of the great American symphonies, dedicatedly wrought by Schwarz and his Seattle musicians. The Fifth is concise and sinewy, the slow movement a deeply felt beauty. The bible-inspired Judith, full of colour and drama, completes a fine picture of a very important and much-admired figure in American music.
