Mozart: Die Zauberflöte [The Magic Flute]

Three ladies rescue Prince Tamino from a serpent. Their mistress, the dazzling Queen of the Night, sends Tamino and genial bird-catcher Papageno with magic flute and bells to rescue her daughter Pamina. Reaching evil Sarastro’s domain Papageno finds Pamina, scaring off the lecherous Monostatos. Tamino and Papageno undergo ordeals of initiation to Sarastro’s brotherhood. Tamino succeeds, even maintaining silence in Pamina’s presence. Pamina contemplates suicide. Reunited, they survive final trials by fire and water. Pagageno fails every challenge, but gets his Papagena. Traitorous Monostatos leads the Queen into Sarastro’s temple, but the coup is unsuccessful. Her defeat causes general rejoicing.
